How do you communicate extreme real life tension amidst stories of abuse, racism, & dysfunction? The main subject of Conroy's books are semi-autobiographical stories. The main characters were brought to life on the book covers through illustration while showing moments of fear and anger that lets the viewer feel the tension within the text.

Conroy has a unique ability to take moments of joy and sorrow and blend them into something very real. The desire was to honor the literature and create works of art that were just as tense and visceral as the books themselves.

Aggressive and muscular techniques were applied to the illustrations all while maintaining the classical forms of the human body. In hope that a beautifully tense work of art would be created to represent the complexity that life often brings.
